Mattia will pick you up at 6.00 AM from your accommodation. We have one hour drive on the historical Stuart Highway. Breakfast is waiting for us at Adelaide River War Cemetery.
The Adelaide River War Cemetery is a sobering reminder of the impact World War II had on this part of Australia.
There are 434 military burials in total and the adjoining Civil Cemetery honors 63 civilians including the nine post office workers who were killed in the 19 February 1942 bombing of Darwin. Also visit the Memorial to the Missing, where 292 service personnel are remembered, who lost their lives in Timor and other northern regions.
There is an informative Information Centre with videos and signs.
We are going to have breakfast organized by Mattia.
We stop for 30 minutes at Katherine Hot Springs. Enjoy the therapeutic thermal water!
By 10.45 we will get to Katherine Gorge, ready for your boat tour at 11.00 AM. Enjoy the most beautiful gorge in the NT, learn about Jawoyn people and their Country. It is a stunning 2-hour cruise. Mattia will give your lunch pack to eat on the Boat.
Edith Falls, known as Leliyn in the Jawoyn language, is one of the Northern Territory’s most enchanting natural treasures. Located within Nitmiluk National Park, offers a peaceful oasis framed by rugged escarpments, monsoon forests, and clear, freshwater pools.
The highlight for many visitors is the stunning upper and lower falls, where cascading water creates natural swimming holes perfect for a refreshing dip. Surrounded by red rock cliffs and paperbark trees, the lower pool is easily accessible and ideal for families, while the upper pools—reachable via a scenic walking trail—offer a more adventurous escape.
Edith Falls is also home to a range of native wildlife, including wallabies, goannas, and birdlife.
Its cultural significance to the Jawoyn people and its breathtaking scenery make Edith Falls a destination that blends relaxation, nature, and heritage. For travelers on a Katherine day tour, it’s the perfect place to unwind and connect with the untouched beauty of the Australian outback.
After Mataranka we are going to drive back to Pine Creek. It is 2-hour drive. If the time allows us, we will do a surprise stop in another swimming spot.
Established in the late 1800s after a gold rush in the area, Pine Creek is located 90km north of Katherine.
The town is a treasure trove of heritage bush buildings and mining sites. Echoes of the gold rush days are still evident in the historic Pine Creek Settlement. Gold was discovered at Pine Creek in 1871 by construction workers on the Overland Telegraph Line. There is a small and informative museum and preserved railway station within the township.
Enjoy a Beer at the 303 Bar in Adelaide River. It is such an historical place; you will live a full NT outback experience. We can meet Charlie, the Buffalo in the Crocodile Dundee movie.
